Course Description

Clinicians encounter trauma in their own lives and in their patients’ lives, yet medical education offers little training on trauma-informed care.  This course provides the development of a shared mental model of trauma-informed care regardless of prior clinical experiences, and will impart practical skills that can be applied across practice settings.  Using a mix of pedagogical approaches including constructivist, reflective, and collaborative approaches, you will have the opportunity for knowledge acquisition, skill building, and integration of novel practices into your individual work environments.

This content uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s four R’s to support you in providing trauma-informed care.  The four R’s are:  (1) Realize, (2) Recognize, (3) Respond, and (4) Resist re-traumatization.  Presenters close with their own 5th R: Resilience and Regulation.

Learning Objectives

  • Define trauma and trauma-informed care
  • Identify the 5 R’s of a trauma-informed approach
  • List three ways you can support a patient who has just disclosed a trauma
  •  List three ways you can adapt your physical exam to avoid re-traumatizing a patient who has experienced trauma
